Active Shooter: Beyond Run-Hide-Fight

Beyond Run-Hide-Fight. A Spartan with a silver trident stands beside a modern SWAT officer, merging ancient resolve and modern readiness.

A Sentinel Preparedness Framework

You Don’t Have to Be a Warrior to Be Prepared.

Preparedness is for everyone. Learn to recognize changing conditions, consider your options, and act deliberately.

For employees, families, caregivers, volunteers, and leaders. Training and implementation by Trident Storms, led by James “JT” Henry.

See the Signs. Consider the Context.

01 / recognition

Preparation Starts in Everyday Places.

Preparedness belongs in the places you already know: your workplace, a hospital waiting area, a community gathering, or the building you visit every week. It begins with paying attention to the environment and knowing how to ask for help. You do not need a uniform or a security background to start learning what information matters.

Beyond Run-Hide-Fight encourages you to separate what you observe from what you assume. Describe behavior and circumstances, consider the context, and learn the appropriate reporting process. Appearance or identity alone is not evidence of danger. The goal is to communicate a concrete concern so it can be considered by the people responsible for responding.

02 / Decision

You Can Practice Before You Face the Pressure.

A useful training scenario gives you time to pause, ask questions, and consider more than one option. What do you know? What remains uncertain? Who needs information, and what could change your decision? Working through these questions makes preparation a practical learning process that you can begin before an emergency.

The discussion should reflect the people and setting involved. Mobility, communication, caregiving responsibilities, and local procedures all belong in that conversation. Through guided examples and reflection, BRHF helps participants identify questions to resolve and arrangements to understand. You can begin with your current experience and build from there.

03 / Action

Your Next Decision Can Change With the Situation.

A decision is made with the information and options available at that moment. If a route becomes unusable, an instruction changes, or new information reaches you, your next decision may need to change too. BRHF brings this ongoing reassessment into the learning process, connecting observation with the choices people consider.

Run, hide, and fight are response options shaped by the situation. Fighting remains a last resort when life is in imminent danger. Training explores these principles alongside communication, access needs, and local emergency plans. The purpose is to help you understand why circumstances matter and practice thinking through a changing situation.

04 / learning

Preparedness Continues Beyond the Incident.

The end of an immediate threat does not end the needs of the people affected. Communication, reunification, practical assistance, and access to support remain part of preparedness. Recovery takes different forms and different amounts of time; a useful plan leaves room for those human differences.

Learning also needs follow-through. An exercise might reveal an unclear message, an overlooked access need, or uncertainty about a responsibility. Turn that observation into a specific improvement, identify who will carry it forward, and check whether it works. This is how a lesson becomes part of the next round of preparation.
